This unique event draws him together with Carolyn Richmond, editor of the volumes, and a number of distinguished experts to discuss his life works.

Introduced by Ayub Khan-Din, scriptwriterSynopsis: Set in 1971, East is East follows the lives of a Pakistani-English family living in Manchester. George Khan (nicknamed Genghis by his children) is a proud Pakistani fish and chip shop owner who believes in abiding by Pakistani cultural traditions. His seven children have other ideas. A quirky comedy with tense drama at its core, this film draws together the East and the West in a truly unique way. The scriptwriter, Ayub Khan-Din, will introduce the film. Born into a mixed-race family, he grew up in an overcrowded house in a white working class area of Manchester. After leaving school, he worked briefly as a hairdresser before enrolling in drama school, where he wrote East is East, first written as a stage play in 1997.

The gulf between the values of the older and younger generations becomes more acute, as culture, tradition and identity are thrown into question.

He studied film directing at FEMIS (France). In addition to his documentary short film Toi, Waguih, he has made a fictional short film entitled Something Evil. He is currently working on his first fictional feature film.

An inventive and challenging film, which boldly confronts issues of belonging. Mahmoud al Massad was born in Zarqa, Jordan, in 1969 to Palestinian parents. He studied Film and Art at Yarmouk University (Jordan). He has lived in various European cities and since 1995 has been working as a director of photography and producer in Holland. His other works include 30 Metres of Silence (2006).
